Encounters Not Loading - Need urgent Help, game tomorrow

Post by Dan_Paddock » Sat Jul 24, 2010 9:24 pm

I have tried to create a couple of encounters tonight and then load them. Each time I get the message:

"Encounter data is not valid, Aborting."

Here are the specs

BG RPG version 1.6g

iMac
Intel Core Duo 2.0Ghz
2 GB Ram
Mac OS X 10.6.4

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

If it helps narrow the problem, the autosaves are also failing to re-open.

The encounters that come with the download work fine.

My encounter uses a server based map.

Email me (or upload) your Encounter/s and I'll take a look.

Server map doesn't seem to be the problem. I tried a local copy and that failed too.

It looks like I may have inadvertently introduced a bug in v1.6g when trying to ensure that you can re-save an Encounter without losing the link to an exported media bundle. The bug is that if a media bundle has not yet been exported yet for that Encounter, the Encounter will fail to load.

It's an easy fix using a text editor to open the Encounter file. Simply search for where it says <void> and replace it with empty quotes. Like so:
  • "Manual Only", 5, "Squares", <Void>, "", 1, "Client Chooses", "Client Chooses"
should be...
  • "Manual Only", 5, "Squares", "", "", 1, "Client Chooses", "Client Chooses"
Looks like there will have to be a v1.6h after all. :(

No problem, that is an easy fix. I was actually wondering if there were some tasks that I might be able to do faster in a text editor, now that I know that .bge files will indeed open in one, I'll have to play around with them a bit.

Will I have to change them every time I change or just once per file?

I believe just the first time an Encounter is created.

In fact, just do one super-basic Encounter file this way, containing nothing but the "Dun" map, then use it as the starting point every time you wish to make a new Encounter by loading it and doing a "Save As".

Alternatively, just save an Encounter as normal, then export a media bundle as soon as you have something on the map, and the Encounter should be loadable from then on without resorting to a text editor.
