i need to roll 4D3, but i also need each one to be a different color as they represent different things.
i've downloaded the free dice expansion off your site and i can do 2 different colors/dice, but i can't seem to add more than that.
is that a limitation of the program or am i missing a step?

Using the dice roller window and/or dice macros, you can only have two die type or die color combinations.
Using dice components, you can have as many as you want. See pg. 99-100 of the BGE User Manual to understand how to roll the dice from the Dice Artpack.

You don't. That is an illustrative example, not how the feature was implemented.
That particular example is from the Feudal Ops game conversion I created. See the last of the screenshots in this BGG post.
To roll dice that have been placed as components in the game table window, use the [Control-R] hotkey ([Command-R], on a Mac).
If you want to use your own background graphic to roll dice on top of, see this thread.
