Custom Dice - and Battlegrounds

Post by zWolf » Mon Sep 17, 2012 9:51 pm

I made a post over on ET about this, but figured I'll look at BGRPG to see if this is already built in... after watching the tutorial... I suspect what I need could easily be done by creating some Tables.... I hit 'pause' on the video right as you start talking about Tables - so, I imagine I'll come back and answer my own question - heh. but in the mean time, I figured I'd drag and drop my questoin over to these forums and see if it's something that you think would work.

Here is basically what I wrote over on the other forums with some comments specific to BGRPG in ()'s:

I'm wondering if assigning custom graffix to 'dice' sides would be something that we might be able to do.

(we might not be able to do 'grafics' per say - but I think rolling based on a Table, might give me the 'result count' that I'd need.)

It might be simply a matter of messing with the grafic files assigned to each side of the dice, changing the existing #'s with the symbols of the custom dice. but it's most likely much more complex than that.

(once again, the 'grafix' part wouldn't be all that important if I had a tracker that reported 'results' of the role... how many hits based on how many dice rolled with a 'hit' side up sort of thing... if the 'hit' was represented by a 5 and 6, it seems like assigning the values to the 5 and 6 in the table as 'hit' might do the trick.)

Either way, it would be nice for some of those od'ball games that choose to do that.

Like Warhammer Fantasy, the new propriatary Dice intensive version.

And apparently Fantasy Flight is going the same route with Star Wars Edge of the Empire.

I traded a convention copy of the 'not yet released' Iron Kingdoms RPG Rule book that I'd picked up at PAX - for a Beta version of the new Star Wars Game Book:

Much to the chagrin of some, and enjoyment of others, this version is going to go with a 'custom dice' mechanic much like what FF did with their take on Warhamer Fantasy. Personally, I found the custom dice slowed down the actual game play - but I figure as folks got better at adding up their success, subtracting the 'blocks' from enemies, and adding in situational modifiers it 'might' smooth out and get out of the way.

So, for good or bad, it 'looks' like that is the direction that FF is headed.

here is a shot of the Dice that they are looking to use:

So, there's my long post to see how hard it would be to let us 'create' custom dice faces... I'd be looking just for something that I could just 'count' on the table top... nothing automated to figuring out success or what not... we can do that at the virtual table, just like we would around the game table at my house.

Thanks for looking at this.

(so that was my post on Epic Table, I think how ever that BG has this already in it's system. now I'll head back to the Video Tutorial and find out for sure.)

Long time no see, Wade.

Sure, you can easily create custom dice in BRPG, and you don't need to resort to using lookup tables. You will, however, need a graphic for each face on a custom die. Put these in a folder inside the "Objects" folder.

First, you will need to create a multi-token unit using those graphics, using the "Create Multi-Token Object" command (see pg. 23).

Then you just roll your custom die using the [Control-R] hotkey (see pg. 107). You'll even hear the appropriate die roll sound effects, depending on how many dice you rolled.
 Please help spread the word about BRPG and BGE, and never hesitate to tell me how I can make them better suit your gaming needs.

Awesome! I'm pretty sure I'll be using BGRPG for a game group for the star wars beta RPG then. thanks for the quick response.

it's true I've not posted for a while, but I do visit occasionally, and then I see you around the forum worlds fairly often. it's kinda cool how 'tightly knit' the VTT community is.

thanks again for the tips!

Wade.
