World Cup 2010

Post by heruca » Wed Jun 23, 2010 1:04 pm

Is anyone else following the World Cup? I was wondering if it is gaining in popularity in the USA, or if it's still considered a non-event there by most people.

I'm rooting for Argentina, of course.

I prefer playing soccer over watching it, but my mother is a big world cup fan. I guess watching my games when I was younger got her hooked.

Soccer is still not immensely popular here but it's definitely gaining popularity.

It seems like it's been a pretty big deal around here, but I'm biased by the fact that my family and friends include a lot of huge soccer fans.

I was in Argentina last World Cup and got to see Argentina win a game and then lose the game that knocked them out. Seeing the team win was a lot more fun!

Argentina is looking good thus far, though the news coverage here tends to focus only on Messi (10%) and the antics of your coach (90%). b

There was a lot of celebrating in the streets here when Argentina made it to the quarter finals the other day. People take football pretty seriously here. :)

Holland is doing pretty well, too. I imagine Kepli will be happy, even though he's away on vacation right now.

Sorry, Kepli. I rooted for the Dutch, but it didn't seem to help. Still, 2nd place in the World Cup isn't too shabby!

Definitely not bad, but still ... <sigh>
It has been 32 years since we were in the finals and we have never won the world cup. Better luck next time

And congratulations to Spain ... well done :)
