BRPG v1.2 beta released |
|
BRPG v1.2 is now available for download. It is to be considered in beta status for the time being.
This is a full install, not a patch.
The main features of this update are:
• 26 new free tokens from Four Ugly Monsters (thanks, Devinnight!)
• Added support for card decks
• Created two default card decks to include with BRPG
• Added the ability for the GM to create custom card decks
• Bug fixes
The format for Encounters and Deployments has not changed since v1.1.
As usual, see the included ReadMe file for more details.
Download BRPG v1.2 here:
Windows version: http://www.battlegroundsgames.com/BRPGv1_2Win.zip
Mac version: http://www.battlegroundsgames.com/BRPGv1_2Mac.zip
Installation instructions are included in each zip file.

I realize that there isn't any documentation yet explaining the new features.
In the next day or two, I will be posting a video tutorial that explains how the Card Table interface works.
But until then, you're welcome to just experiment. It should be fairly intuitive, and if it isn't, you can offer suggestions for how to make it easier.
The Basics:
From the BG button's popup menu, select "Card Table". This opens the card table window, but it will be empty at first. You need to select a card deck to use. That part should be straightforward enough.
At this point, if all you need for your game is to draw cards at random, you're ready to go. You can draw a card by right-clicking on the deck and selecting the "Draw Card" command from a contextual popup menu. You can also access this popup menu by double-clicking the card deck. But the easiest and most intuitive method is just to drag-and-drop the card from the deck to the area just to the right of the deck. That area is called the Discard Pile.
The Discard Pile has its own popup menu (accessed the same way).
Any time you click and hold the mouse on a face-up card, you will see a zoomed image of it in the upper right corner of the Card Table window. The zoomed image goes away when you release the mouse button. This feature is ideal for custom card decks that have small print on the cards that is hard to read at the normal card size.
Once you played around enough to get familiar with how things work, click on the "Manage Players" button. Add a few players using the tools provided. If you are hosting a game session and anyone else is logged in, you will be able to define them as the "Owner" of the virtual card player you are defining. Click the "Done" button when you are finished adding card players. You can always add more later, if you need to.
Now when you return to the main card table screen, you will see three more popup menus: they allow you to define who the Dealer is, who's hand you wish to view, and who's Play Area you wish to view. A permissions-based system takes care of showing you only the cards you are entitled to view. Even the GM cannot see a player's cards (except for GM-controlled card players).
A player's hand is shown in the top portion of the window, where there is a semi-transparent white area. The are in the middle is reserved for the card deck and the Discard Pile. The lower portion of the screen is for showing cards that are "In Play" (i.e., on the virtual table). Cards in the Hand area and in the Play area also have contextual popup menus available, so please explore all the options.
Cards can be dragged-and-dropped between all four of these areas. For example, to play a card, you simply drag it from your Hand Area into the Play Area.
OK, this is getting a bit lengthy, so I'll wrap this up. Just a word of warning: I suspect that some bugs have yet to be discovered, so don't play anything too serious at first until we sort out any issues. And, as always, feel free to make feature suggestions for future releases.

Okay, my question is:
Since I will never use BRPG for any kind of card game, I'm a little hesitant to download 1.2. How much does the card deck feature increase the already large program size? Is there any bloat?

Yes, the beta will work with an unlicensed Demo, with one exception: you will not be able to create a custom card deck without a GM Client license (but you will still be able to see the way the feature would work, if you had a license).

and where is that windows version? |
My apologies for the delay on the Windows version, but I have a damn good excuse.
As some of you may already know, I was expecting my first son in early April. It turns out that he didn't want to wait around that long. He was born yesterday, about 6 weeks early.
Mother and son are doing fine, although the baby will be in an incubator for a while, until his lungs are sufficiently developed. I will be in and out of the hospital constantly for the next few weeks, so please understand that I won't be around as much to answer questions, offer tech support, or issue license codes as quickly as I normally do.
So, while I cannot devote much time right now to releasing the Windows version of BRPG v1.2, I can offer you a partial solution via the following patching procedure:
1. Download the Mac version and unzip it.
2. Copy over the following files into your BRPG v1.1b directory, overwriting the existing files when prompted:
Browser.dxr
Card Table.dxr
MainMIAW.dxr
Table Support.cxt
tableScripts.dcr
3. Copy the entire "Card Decks" folder into your BRPG v1.1b directory
4. DO NOT copy over "Dice Roller.dxr".
5. Copy the contents of "Figures/Devinnight's Tokens" into the same relative location within the v1.1b directory.
This patching procedure is entirely untested, but the end result SHOULD BE that you end up with everything the Mac users have except for four bug fixes (all relating to Dice Macros).
Perhaps Omnidon can go through this process first and upload a ready-to-go Windows zip file, so that eager users can try it out until the real thing is released.
Edit: Windows users may see a lot of "garbage files" (actually, resource forks, which Windows doesn't need/use) after unzipping the Mac Zip file. These should be deleted. The filenames of these garbage files tend to start with a period, and they may be invisible files.

There is some file size bloat (the Zip file is ~4MBs larger than v1.1b), but I think it will be worth upgrading even if you don't have any need of the card deck features. The bug fixes should help everyone, especially those who use hex mode or FoW a lot.
Another thing to consider is that perhaps you have a use for card support and don't quite realize it. You could use Combat Cards, Maneuver Cards, Equipment cards, etc.. In other words, you won't be using card decks as a randomization tool, but as a visual aid or Character Inventory tool.

Congratulations Heruca.
My eldest daughter was born 7 weeeks early and I well remember how small she was (born at 4lbs 4oz and dropping to 3lbs 7oz [as they do] at the lowest) and the time in the incubator and trips to the hospital etc. Always slightly anxiety provoking, but no problems at all and home in a few weeks. I still have lots of very clear memories of lying in bed with her in my arms.
You'll find the interruptions and work really starts when they get home.

Congrats, Heruca! Sounds like he's just trying to get a head-start on life.
Unfortunately, it looks like you may be raising a little Mac munchkin as he has clearly set out to sabotage the Windows release.

I tried the above manual Windows patch method and everything seems to be working as expected. I haven't tested the card table stuff yet, but the Hex map fixes I really wanted are there

Thanks for the temp file, Omnidon.
I've been getting a little work done at the hospital, so I hope to have a final BRPG v1.2 for Windows released by Wednesday. The development work is done, it just needs to be compiled, tested, packaged up, and uploaded.

Could a Windows user please test out the attached file to make sure it works OK?
To test this properly, you must have Omnidon's temporary v1.2 package already installed. Then just unzip the attached file ("Dice Roller.dxr") and place it in your BRPG directory, overwriting the existing one when prompted.
Thanks in advance.
If it checks out, I'll go ahead and upload a complete package of "BRPG v1.2 for Windows", probably tonight.

Well, it seems to work fine for dice rolling, though I haven't tested whether it fixes any bugs.

OK, the full Windows version of BRPG v1.2 is now complete, and available for download. See the opening post for the link.
