GURPS old west campaign

Post by fb66 » Mon Oct 18, 2010 4:07 pm

I have been running a sucessful old west campaign using GURPS and Battlegrounds for a little while now. I have three players and we aim to hold two sessions a month. The campaign is coming up for its tenth session and so far just under one week of game time has passed.

The campaign year is 1876 and it is set in a fictional oldwest town in the black hills region of what is now Dakota. Prior to the game starting Gold was discovered in the Black Hills and streams of settlers from the USA entered the hills to seek the fortunes creating several technically illegal settlements in Indian Territory. One such settlement is where the game is set. The camapign began 2 weeks after the defeat of Custer by the Sioux.

The players had a budjet of 150cp to create their pc's and all three opted to play competant gun slinger types. Two of the PC's are from texas and share a secret. The other is a well known gunslinger from Sacremento.
The first few sessions followed the PC's as they were escorting a small wagon train into the town from Dakota.

The back ground for this campaign is taken from Coyote trail's Shadey Gulch available from SJG E23 site. I have made some basic maps using componants i purchased in sidewinder recoiled frontier towns Fort griffen also available from SJG E23 site. The tokens i use i purchased from the your games now site. I would like to provide screen shots but i am not sure how legal that would be with all this copyrighted material.

The PC's had to deal with a small group of very different but quite demanding travellers they were being paid to guard. Including the somewhat mysterious Mr Smith whose wagons were off limits to all. Then there was the towns new female doctor(think a modified Quin medicine woman lol) and her teenage daughter. The doctors daughter immediately developed a strong crush on one of the PC's she also had a very bad case of teenage overconfidence and an old henry rifle.

Just as the wagon train entered it's final stages one of the PC's caught one of their fellow guards messing about on the back of one of Mr Smiths wagons. The trail boss was not pleased and had the errant guard placed under guard during which time he admitted he had been put up to it by another one of the guards to the pc guarding him. The pc confronted the man thus accused who made the mistake of throwing down on a veteran gunslinger. The acused guard (montanna mike) took a .45 long colt round to the torso and fell down screaming.

The trail boss used some very unconventional tactics (read torchure) to get the truth out of montanna mike. It turns out mike was a mole for a gang of road agents looking to take Mr smiths cargo of guns and ammunition. He revealed the approximate location of the road agents camp. The trail boss and the PC's went ahead and attacked the road agents camp. A short firefight ensued during which all the road agents bar one were shot dead. The last one attempted to flee on horse back but he too was cut down by some acurate rifle fire from the trail boss.

That night the group made camp with the intention of making the final run in to the town the next day. Dawn however revealed them to be in more trouble than they thought. The PC on watch noticed some one aproaching the camp by stealth. It turned out to be a sioux scout. He claimed to be from a smal tribe who did not favour war with the white man but that situation was likely to change as their tribal burial ground was being raided by whites and the dead mutilated. The scout was sent to see if the PC's were the ones responsible. Obviously they were not and the pc's offered to help deal with those that were. The scout agreed to take their offer to the tribe who accepted it.

The PC's then entered the burial ground following a fresh trail they belived to be non natives. They were right and found a group hunting for recent corpses to mutilate. The PC's attempted to talk to them and discovered they were stealing indian heads to sell to saloon keeper in deadwood who had offered a bounty of $50 per head. They refused to stop or to return any heads. The grave robers fired on the PC's who luckily dodged the incoming fire and returned it. The pc's found them selves pinned down until a rain of arrows fell about the grave robbers position. During the ensuing fight the grave robers were killed but the tribe miss identified the pc's as more grave robbers. There followed a chase down the hill and along the trail with the pc's running from the tribe. Just as it looked like the wagon train was finished the scout that had spoken to the pc's managed to call off his fellow warriors.

The head long rush along the trail did serve to make up for time lost during the hunt for the grave robbers and the train made its way into the town. It was after arriving that the PC's found out they had been escorting a gun smith and a large stock of weapons and amunition into the town at the behest of the mayor. They also discovered tha the previous gun smith had been murdered in his shop and his entire stock disapeared. The gun smith was not to pleased to hear thet either and made the PC's an offer to live in his shop in exchange for them providing security. the PC's agreed.

During the unloading of the wagons a team of local sneak thieves attempted a distration theft of a crate of guns but an eagle eyed PC spotted them and put a winchester round into one of them. The others abandoned the crate and disapeared into the busy streets crowd.

The rest of the day was spent helping the smith get his shop set up and getting settled. In the evening they recieved visits from several locals inviting them to meet some of the towns notble citizens (read gang leaders). The players attended several meetings and began to realise the town they had selected to make their home was a very interesting yet dangerous place with at least three big factions competing for control of lucrative markets at any cost.

I will post more soon lol.

Sounded fun, but my eyes glazed over while trying to read the long block of unbroken text. Try adding a few paragraph breaks. They're free! :P

Having arrived in town in spectactular fashion the PC's and their new friend the Smith were visited by two of the towns big players henchmen in order to make a quick assesment of them and to invite them to meet their bosses. There followed two meetings in the saloons owned by the bosses who turned out to be brothers preparing for a war to determine sucession to the head of the family.

Both brothers recognises veteran gun fighters when they saw them and did all they could to encourage the PC's to consider working for them instead of the Smith. The PC's wisely decided to keep their options open and stay neutral. This turned out to be an especially astute decision when they discovered that the town had in fact got a third possibly even more powerful "boss" who was also curious about them and the Smith.

On there way back from the second meeting the PC's ran into the towns deputy and shortly after the town sherrif. There followed a discusion where one of the PC's expressed an interest in becoming a law man. The town's mayor has only allocated funds for one deputy and that deputy realised the sherrif favoured the PC. He was not keen on loosing his job despite a nagging worry he knew the pc from somewhere. The deputy decided he would not allow this man to take his job. He took up a position across the street in concealment and aimed his rifle at the PC's head. As the PC turned around he spotted the deputy and went for cover. At that exact moment the deputy finially put two and two together and realised the man he was about to have a gun fight with was a famous gunslinger. The deputy imediately threw himself on the mercy of the PC.

Thankfully for the deputy the PC was in the mood to make allies even if they were a somewhat cowardly deputy and didnt kill him. In fact following a conversation all three PC's ended up agreeing to go on patrol through tent city with the deputy. The deputy recipricated by offering to take them to a favourite drinking place of his in tent city. the pc's agreed.

Whilst at the tent saloon two of the pc's (jim and jonah) had a run in with some guys who seemed to know an awful lot about of stuff they were desperate to keep secret. They made some heavy hints for payment and then left. The town deputy offered to find out all he could about them including where they were staying and how many of them there are.

The PC's and the deputy left the bar and came across a donkey that was rushing through tent city on its own. They were able to stop the donkey and found a rolled up carpet on its back the carpet contained a body. The pc's sent for the sherrif but searched the body before he arrived. One of the pc's found a claim notice in the boot of the body and palmed it. The one thing that struck everyone at the scene was the expensive nature of the carpet the body was rolled up in.

Having finally called in the sherrif to investigate the body in the carpet mystery the PC's found them selves in the recieving end of a stern grilling by the towns peace officer who was not pleased to hear the PC's had examined the body before he did. The only reason they were not considered suspect ws the presence of the deputy and the previous good reaction that the pc Vince earned from the sherrif on their first encounter.

Once clear of the sheriff the pc's went back to the gun smiths shop they were bunking in for some much over due shut eye.

The next morning saw the arrival of one of the two waring brothers chief henchman to the shop asking the smith to go to discuss some busines with his boss. The Smith had by now realised the dangerous nature of the two saloon keeper brothers and asked one of the PC's to escort him to the meeting. The pc agreed. Whilst at the saloon the saloon boss dropped a very unsubtle hint to the PC that he had noted his brother was trying to replace a missing carpet at the competing saloon. The PC came away from this encounter with the distinct impression this tip off was the entire purpose of the meeting.

The next significant encounter was once again with the town sherif who wanted to confirm some details with the PC's. During this meeting the pc's informed the sherif of the tip off they had recieved. The sherif immediately set off to investigate the tip.

A couple of hours later the PC's recieved an invite to dinner at the saloon belonging to the brother trying to buy a new carpet. The PC's agreed to go but went prepared for an ambush. What they found was enitrely unexpected. The saloon keeper had in fact closed off part of his saloon and put on a really quite impressive dinner for the PC's during which they were plied with generous amounts of whiskey and fine cigars. Two of the three pc's were very careful to consume only small amounts of the powerful fire water offered but the third took advantage of the free booze. The pc who was drinking began to become a little to free with information the rest of the group would rather have been kept secret. However the saloon keeper just seemed to get friendlier. He even encouraged the pc's to partake of the services of his best and most attractive soiled doves. The pc's took advantage of the offer.

Two of the three pc's were very careful about what they said and paid very careful attention to what was going on as they smelt a trap. the third who had been drinking just had fun. One of the pc's Vince had a moment of mild shock when he realised the carpet on the floor of the room was identicle to the one wrapped around the body. He also became suspicous of the lay ou tthe room and of a painting on the wall. The eyes seemed to follow him and there was a section of the painting that looked somewhat akin to a disguised firing port.
Vince did however put in a very good performance of a man who had drunk a little to much and needed to lie down. as he did so he noticed the girl he was with take advantage of his appearent sleepyness to go through his belongings. It looked to him to be a systematic search for something in particular. He also noted the girls constant glances at the painting. She was scared.

What followed was a sequence that managed to reduce the GM and the players into fits of uncontrolled laughter as Vince proceeded to Interogate the girl WHILST MAKING LOVE TO HER using a simple form of coded responces. His efforts were rewarded with some very telling facts and his unusual aproach did not seem to tip of the armed guard watching from the painting.

The other two pc's failed to notice the girl they were with searching their belongings and most telling of all they did spot them find the highly important claims notice which the pc ws still carrying. The girl put the notice back and reported the find to her boss.

Please watch next weeks exciting episode to find out what happens next.

This campaign takes place approximately twice a month (not on a regular set day due to strange work schedules of the gm plus one player) and has three players, two of whome use the GM's two floating liscences. The third player has his own liscenced copy of battlegrounds. We are currently using version 1.6k which has thankfully been reasonably reliable though the big test will be on the next session when we will go tactical on more than one occasion (possible hint to the players there lol).

I could accomodate one or maybe two more players but they would have to have a liscenced copy of battlegrounds as all my floating liscences are in use. So if you are interested in some gun play and can attend twice a month on average on irregular nights. Then please feel free to let me know.

After a long break the campaign has restarted. For the first session we had only two of the three players active and were using the new official version 1.6m. I have created a new test map including a dice table on the side using the dice art pack. This allows players to roll hidden rolls thenselves. It is a little cunky (due to not being aware who rolled the dice lol) but did allow players to remain masters of their own destiny.

As we left the campaign the one pf the players was in possession of a claim notice taken off a murder victim. The dead mans killer were aware the pc had it and wanted it back. They therefore staked out the players new residence to look for an oppertunity.

This was forthcoming when the towns new doctor and her teenage daughter paid a visit. The doctor was a bit miffed the PC's forgot about the dinner she had cooked for them but still wanted to invite them to a house warming dinner so forgave them. Her daughter wished to trade her fathers old henry rifle for a shiny new winchester 1873 (she is a bit of a tom boy with a massive crush on several of the PC's and has the missguided idea she is a competant rifle woman). The towns new gun smith and the pc's employer left one of the pc's to negotiate the trade which in the end was sucesful.

The daughter then asked one for one of the PC's to take her out of town for familiarity training with the new rifle. Vincent Durnham (the groups famous gunfighter agreed). The PC's boss asked if he could walk the lady doctor home and she agreed. The PC's insisted one of them go with him as body guard. That left one pc in the shop.

It was the pc with the claim notice that was selected to be the body guard. The smith and the doc set of with Jonah in close escort. The enemy gang decided to split up. Two men set off after Jonah with instructions to back shoot him and get the claim notice. Two were sent to follow Vincent and just make sure he stayed away long enough for the other team to do its stuff. The last pair were to try and search the shop.

The last PC James went up stairs to watch his coleagues set off and noticed the two men following jonah. He snuck out the back and tried to head them off and quietly warn Jonah. Unfortunately the doc stopped to admire some hats and the smith opted to buy her one and conducted a lengthy negotiation on the price. Thus Jim arrived at the docs house to find it empty and began to back track.

He was just intime to see the two bad guys launch their slightly botched attack on Jonah. A gun fight ensued with Jonah managing to wound one of the bad guys in exchange for a flesh wound. James took aim with his rifle. The next round saw the ramaining bad guy score a critical hit on Jonah and drop him. James fired onhim and killed him out right. he then fired on the other wounded bad guy and despatched him too.

Meanwhile vincent became aware that he was being followed and tried in vain to convince the doctors daughter to run. She point blank refused so he pushed her into cover and turned on his persuers.
There followed a tense face off as this pair had no real intention of tangling with a nationally famous gunfighter with only a two to one odds advantage. The situation became massively more dangerous when the last pair of bad guys came up in suport havng made a quick search of the shop (very quick search). Guns got drawn. The doctors daughter readied her rifle in suport of vincent which further complicated matters.

With the stand off looking ever more likely to turn violent the street around them emptied quickly to reveal the town lawman (another famous gunfighter) aproaching the bad guys from behind. His sudden apearence broke the cowardly leader fothe gangs morale and they left as quickly as possible.

Vincent and the sherif then went to the aid of jonah and James. though they got there after it was long over. Jonah was found to be not too badly wounded and both bad guys dead.

At that point Jonah decided to come clean and admit to the sherif he had the claim notice the bad guys were after. He turned it over to the sherif. Thoe doc and her daughter went home as did the pc's and the Smith.

It was decided that that was a convenient point to end the session.

It reports who rolled what in the Chat window, doesn't it? You could also use different-colored dice for each player, and give each player ownership of only the dice of their color.

No reporting of who rolled the dice using the on table dice from the art pack in 1.6m.
The different coloured dice makes sense though lol
is there a limit to the number of objects that can be on a map with a liscenced copy of BG?

600 objects max, and that's only if you have less than 20 figures on the map (340 objects max, otherwise).

Spelling is a gift - you either have it or you don't. ;)

I don't have it either. I just know about Sacramento because my folks live there :)
