RPG Maker XP

Post by Omnidon » Mon Aug 14, 2006 1:00 am

RPG Maker XP is a powerful tool designed for making console-style RPGs on the computer.

RPG Maker XP Home
http://www.enterbrain.co.jp/tkool/RPG_XP/eng/

It has a 30-day trial and retails at $60.
There's also a free version of dubious legality floating around.

The Run Time Package (RTP) that is available there includes a wide assortment of artwork and sound files, all of which can be extracted for use elsewhere.

You can also get some very nice free resources for RPG Maker from these sites and others:

http://www.untamed.wild-refuge.net/rpgxp.php

http://www.teamanti.com/rmxp/

http://www.angelfire.com/rpg2/rpgcommun ... urces.html

There are links to other game creation tools at those sites as well.

If you want to see how RPG Maker tiles can be used to make great oldstyle maps for BRPG, check out these huge sample maps by Inquisitor:

http://www.rpg-palace.com/artists/xptiles/gamefull.zip

He probably pieced together screenshots to make those, since unfortunately RPG Maker doesn't have any Export Map feature that I know of. (It's not really intended for use with other apps.)

You can download his tilesets and other stuff from RPG-Palace.com

As I said, you can of course just use those tiles in another program such as Dunjinni, though the images would have to be cropped.

Note that there are older versions of RPG Maker available too and that much of their content is not compatible for RPG Maker XP, though it can be converted.
RPG Maker 2003 is still quite popular, though the english translation appears to violate copyright.

Heh, you already listed RPG Maker here:

But this is more thorough, so leave it as is.

Yeah, I remembered mentioning it, but back then I wasn't considering using it to make maps ;-)
